Celebrating 27 Years of Excellence under the direction of Dalene Hoogenhout.
The Wits Choir - now in its 59th year of existence - is celebrating 27 years of excellence under the direction of Dalene Hoogenhout. Since being appointed to reconstitute the choir as an independent and representative ensemble of high musical standard at Wits University in 1994, Dalene has led the choir to becoming one of the leading choral music ensembles in South Africa. Hoogenhout and the Choir have brought the music of the African continent to many audiences and other choirs both locally and internationally on the numerous tours and outreach projects undertaken over the past 27 years. This May, the choir celebrated Dalene's 27th anniversary with an exciting variety music festival; featuring a great line-up of guest performers and Wits choir alumni.
Membership is open to all, resulting in a fully representative choir drawn from diverse national and international cultures.
We have an extensive outreach programme for the advancement of choral music and conducting. Mini-tours to the Cape Platteland, Mpumalanga and to the Royal Bafokeng in Phokeng (near Rustenburg) have afforded the Wits Choir the opportunity to work with local choirs and conductors for the furthering of music education and to form meaningful partnerships. The choir also regularly holds choir festivals and workshops involving singers and conductors from church, school and community choirs.
"This choir is an enduring image of the Rainbow Nation in action." - Professor Stephen Baskerville, on the occasion of De Montford University Graduation 2006.
